Zen-Meditation
The intimate meditation space to explore Zazen in depth, in the presence of a Zen monk.

You don’t need to think of zazen as something difficult. We understand zazen as a method for observing reality and coming to know ourselves and the world. It is not a technique for stopping thought, nor is it simply for relaxation. It is a practice of observing and questioning reality for ourselves, understanding it on our own terms, and recognizing our relationship with the world. Through this, we can directly experience a deep sense of ease and freedom.
In practice, zazen is very simple. We set aside judgments—ideas of how things “should be,” or thoughts of right and wrong—and simply look at reality as it is. I teach how to use the body, how to sit, and how to practise in a way that allows anyone to engage in zazen anytime, anywhere. I will accompany you so that you can integrate this practice into your daily life.
I hope that zazen becomes a source of nourishment—something that helps you live more freely and joyfully.
Let us sit together.

In Zen tradition, there are places known as Zazen-kutsu(caves) or hollows carved into rock or mountainsides where monks secluded themselves to sit in deep meditation.
At the end of a narrow, winding alley lies a quiet, dimly lit inner space.
Here, Ochill Kyoto can be likened to a cave within the modern city.
It is a place to observe humanity and the world from an abstract perspective.
This is a Zazen-kutsu for those who wish to deepen their practice of zazen.
If you listen closely, it may feel as though you can hear a single drop of water echoing inside a cave.
Though located in the Nishijin area of Kyoto, this dark hollow hidden at the end of an alley is completely detached from the noise of the city.
It is a hollow dedicated solely to sitting in focused meditation.

What exactly are we doing when we sit still in zazen?
What processes unfold, and what occurs through the practice?
In this session, we explain what happens during zazen and how to practice it in a concrete and accessible way.
This is an introductory session for those who are new to zazen or wish to gain a clearer understanding of the practice.

We are prepared to respond to any questions related to zazen,
but we do not actively offer explanations in this session.
One incense stick burns for approximately 45 minutes.
This is a place for those who simply wish to sit quietly.
Zazen-kutsu sessions are held in small groups of approximately 1 to 10 participants.
We respect each person’s individual pace, and there is no use of the keisaku (warning stick).
Even if you are sitting alongside someone you have never met,
sitting together can gently support and encourage you—especially in an abstract practice such as zazen.
Zazen in the Zazen-kutsu is a time to think fully what needs to be thought
and to feel fully what needs to be felt.
What you come to accept naturally falls away.
Beyond that, you may encounter a deeper stillness,
and perhaps experience a level of concentration far beyond what daily life usually allows.
By sitting together, we will accompany you as fully as possible.
